BOULDER, Colo. — Although still emerging, the market for zero net energy homes (ZNEHs) is expected to be led by new construction in North America, notes Navigant Research. Other countries in select regions, such as Europe and Asia-Pacific, are also beginning to follow suit with ZNE initiatives and energy efficient building codes. According to a report from the research firm, North America is expected to lead the ZNEH market from 2015 to 2025.

“California is leading the drive toward ZNEHs worldwide with its goal of 100 percent of newly constructed homes to be ZNE beginning in 2020,” said Neil Strother, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “However, other states are also beginning to take small steps toward residential energy efficiency and ZNEHs.”

Though Europe and Asia-Pacific represent a much smaller portion of the nascent market over the forecast period, both regions are expected grow quickly, according to the report. ZNEH units in Europe, for instance, are expected to grow from 185 in 2015 to more than 1,500 in 2025 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.4 percent.
