Led by the UN Environment Programme under the framework of the Cool Coalition, the India Cold Chain Programme is being launched with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare at the India Cold Chain Conclave – a one-day exhibition and conference focusing on “Innovation & Excellence in Cold Chain”.
Developed in consultation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the National Centre for Cold Chain Development (NCCD) and in partnership with the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), the programme is set to help raise public awareness on the benefits of sustainable cold chains in India’s cooling sector and accelerate policymaking and implementation for more energy-efficient, sustainable cold chains in the country. The programme is supported by the Government of Denmark under the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership, the Clean Cooling Collaborative and Tabreed CSR.
Mr Atul Bagai, Head of UNEP India, points out that we cannot address the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution without confronting food loss and food insecurity, rising energy and refrigerant emissions and inequality.
“All countries need to accelerate development of clean cold chain as a critical infrastructure and India is truly a global leader in establishing the holistic ecosystem needed for cold chain expansion. UNEP, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and NCCD are working together as a joint team for cold-chain development and we are pleased to launch our Cold-Chain Support Programme with our partners AEEE, EESL and BEE as part of this prestigious conclave and in presence of honourable minister”, he stated.
To mark the launch of the India Cold Chain Programme, UNEP is hosting the session “The Road to Net-Zero – Shaping the Future Cold Chain” at the Conclave. This session examines the role of cold chains in delivering India’s and other countries’ net zero goals while enhancing climate adaptation, food security and socioeconomic development. The panel will hear from global and local viewpoints on cold chain and its relevance for net zero and from two state governments being supported under UNEP’s India Cold Chain Program: Bihar and Haryana.
“AEEE is excited to co-launch the program on ‘Scaling up Investment in Clean and Efficient Cold-chain in India’ with UNEP and EESL”, shared the President & Executive Director of AEEE, Dr Satish Kumar. He added: “The development of an integrated and uninterrupted cold chain aligns perfectly with the Government of India’s vision of doubling farmers’ income with agri-logistics as the backbone of future agricultural development. It will provide essential market linkages for reducing food loss across the country and ensuring food security and farmers’ welfare”.
